Lightspeed Insights alternatives for small stores (2026)
If you're on Lightspeed X-Series Basic or Core, you've probably hit the wall: the sell-through, dusty inventory (dead stock), and recently-out-of-stock reports "are not available on the discontinued Pro and the current Core plans," per Lightspeed's basic vs. advanced reporting doc. The bigger toolkit — Insights, with demand forecasting, order recommendations, and custom reporting — lives on the Plus plan.
On Lightspeed's pricing (checked July 2026): Basic is US$89/month billed annually ($109 monthly), Core is $149 ($179), and Plus is $289 (~$339). Going Core → Plus on annual billing is about $1,680/year. For a single store, that's real money for what is, at its heart, arithmetic on data you already own — every plan can export it as CSV.
Here are the realistic options, honestly assessed. Several of them are good products that cost more than the Plus upgrade itself — worth knowing before you shop.
Option 1: Just upgrade to Plus
Sometimes the right answer is the boring one. Plus is genuinely worth it when:
- You run multiple locations. Insights' reporting across outlets, inside the same POS your staff already use, beats stitching exports together.
- You reorder constantly and want PO automation. Demand forecasting and suggested reorder quantities feed directly into purchasing — no third party matches that inside X-Series.
- You want scheduled custom reports landing in inboxes without anyone touching a spreadsheet.
If that's you, stop reading and upgrade. The rest of this list exists for the single-store operator who needs the answers a few times a year, not the live dashboard every day.
Option 2: StockTrim (~US$199/month)
A dedicated demand-forecasting and inventory-planning tool with a Lightspeed integration. The forecasting engine is the product: seasonality, lead times, reorder suggestions. Strong if you have a large catalog, manufacture or assemble, or reorder from long-lead-time suppliers. But at ~$199/month you're most of the way to Plus pricing for one slice of what Plus does — it makes sense when forecasting is your actual bottleneck, not when you just want to see your dead stock.
Option 3: Inventory Planner by Sage (~US$245/month, quote-led)
The heavyweight: open-to-buy planning, forecasting, replenishment across channels. Popular with ecommerce-first merchants. Pricing is quote-led (expect roughly $245/month and up) and the sales process involves demos. Excellent at scale; overkill — in both money and setup effort — for a single storefront.
Option 4: Zoined (from ~€99/month)
Retail analytics dashboards with a Lightspeed connector — polished visuals for sales, staff, and inventory KPIs, well suited to owners who want a weekly scorecard. It's analytics rather than action, though: it shows trends more than it tells you what to reorder or clear, and it's another ongoing subscription.
Option 5: SyncHub (US$49+/connector) + your own BI
SyncHub pipes your Lightspeed data into a database you can point Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio at. Cheapest live-data route by far — if you (or someone on staff) can build reports. You're buying plumbing, not answers. Great for the operator who's comfortable in BI tools; a stalled project for everyone else.
Option 6: DIY spreadsheets (free)
Every number in the gated reports can be rebuilt from CSV exports — we publish the exact formulas in our dead stock report guide and map out every export in the CSV export guide. Cost: zero dollars and an hour or two, repeated every time you want fresh numbers. Honest downsides: it's manual, formula errors are silent, and in practice "monthly" becomes "quarterly" becomes "that spreadsheet from last year."
Option 7: ShelfReport (free scan; $79 one-time)
Our tool, so judge accordingly — but the positioning is simple: single store, CSV-first, cheapest by a wide margin. Upload your product list and sales history exports; get dead-stock (ranked by dollars tied up), reorder-risk, and cash-leakage reports. The free scan shows headline findings; the full report is $79 once, not per month. Honest downsides: it's not real-time (you re-upload when you want a refresh), it doesn't write purchase orders, and it isn't a forecasting engine. It answers "where is my cash stuck and what's about to stock out" — that's the whole job.
